Mission
The mission of Kayla’s Village is to promote the support and retention of parents and social service professionals. Our goal is to effectively and efficiently train and appreciate those connected to our organization through strength- and performance-based interactions, which allow us ultimately to benefit the children we are passionate about and love.
At Kayla's Village, we make every attempt to invest in better information gathering, information sharing, and support for parents and social service professionals which will lead to greater recruitment and retention of larger numbers of these individuals. The time is NOW to invest because you are the ones who directly affect the outcomes of our needy children. Failure to seize this opportunity could lead to general disillusionment and increased social tensions because when children must be asked to again reconnect to new individuals, it makes their positive outcomes less likely.
Our History
Kayla's Village was birthed in July 2007 as a project of South Washington/West of the River Family Strengthening Collaborative (SWWR). In January 1997, SWWR was established to address the problem of child abuse and neglect in the Southeast/ Southwest area of the District of Columbia. SWWR was conceived to strengthen families so that children need not enter foster care. However, the challenges of some families are increasing and there are times when children do need to be removed. Kayla's Village seeks to maintain families and workers caring for others' children by building the capacity of and providing support to foster and adoptive parents, guardians, social workers, and social service professionals for the challenging work they perform.
Tonya Logan, founder of Kayla's Village, began her child welfare social work career in 1991. She has D.C. and Maryland licenses, has worked at six agencies, and is a contractor with four social service agencies. Tonya serves on two Boards of Directors and one Advisory Committee. She has provided services to many children between the ages of birth and twenty-one connected to the D.C. foster care system as well as families at-risk of abuse and neglect. Tonya has conducted trainings and is now parenting two children, one who joined the family via adoption.
